trying to rip some eproms to convert tmnt to another game

i can get the pgr to work as the game boots up and you can tell its playing just fine but the gfx chip is killing me all i get is garbled graffix

the tmnt style carts have 2 27010 chips and a 2764

im using nes to pc10 to convert the files i need
but i end up with a 128 k and a 32 k file i have tried ripping the gfx file to a 2764 and a 27 256 and neither is giving me any love any ideas

Pete:
Which game are you ripping. Not all games end up with both chr and prg files at 128k. Really it is a crap shoot - sometimes I try burning the smaller files on the 27010 chips. Sometimes I try burning them on the correct sized chip and placing it on the board. Fortunately/unfortunately both options have worked in different situations. Lots of trail and error.

discgolfer72:
doing bubble bobble

and since its not listed on the pdf data sheet its kicking my ars

i need to convert track n f 2 as well

discgolfer72:
nvm i figured it out i was going by file size i just used 2 27c010 at u1 and u4 and it worked

i had tried using a 256 and 128 at u1 and it was working but gfx were all goofy

In regards to Ninja Gaiden 3, Shatterhand & RBI Baseball. Reading a lot of posts on sites and people seem to be on the fence if either of these 3 titles for the Playchoice exist. I have seen boards but then people say they are just installed chip sets. Its the only 3 PCB in the game list section that has no pictures of boards.

So which is it Fact or Fiction?

Would I as a buyer be able to tell if a board to be factual or a fake?

Thanks.

Pete:
I've seen Shatterhand go up for auction several years ago (before I knew that I would have to own it), but I haven't seen it since. I've seen the printed label for RBI Baseball. And I've just seen a photo of Ninja Gaiden 3.

One of the reasons I created the site was to document the games with photos (sort of like proof of life). I'm still waiting for photos for two of these three.

can a counter top pc 10 be outfitted with a light gun if so is it hard to do?what would I need

Pete:
I don't think so. The Playchoice wiring harness normally has a red and white gun connector built in (even if the cabinet doesn't have a gun, so it can be added later). I don't remember seeing gun plugs when I worked on my countertop last year.

I checked the photos from this auction and it doesn't look like they are there either. You might want to check with the seller to know for sure.
http://cgi.ebay.com/170336536481

You could try to rewire the countertop with an upright PC10 harness, but it might be more trouble than it is worth.

(I've got a nice single monitor upright in Minnesota I'm looking to sell if you're interested?)

rotwiler123:
thanks pete ile check it out i do need some games if you got any to sell

I just purchased a playchoice 10 dual monitor and not knowing anything about these machines I brought it home and then realized the bottom monitor has no blue in it. Any ideas?

Robert Rose:
there are color adjustment knobs on the backs of the monitors...adjust those. Get a manual if you can, it lays everything out

Hey guys, anyone here started to purchase/create roms for the PC-10 ?
I am interested in adding some games to my PC-10.
I have like 200 NES games that I love dearly (teardrop falling)
I would like to add em to my arcade from time to time and have the ability to switch em out etc etc.
Has anyone had this experience yet of buying em, do they work fairly good?
How bout the update chip. There really is a lot of info on this and a lot of steps.
I would hate to mess up any of my NES games..
I'm also up for trading, and any tips and ideas.
Contact me at baddboo@gmail.com

Crabboy

Pete:
Don't dissect your NES cartridges. Most use Mask ROM chips, which aren't compatible for conversion to the PC10 boards - and most of the time they are soldered in.

The "Compatible NES Game List" page on this site lists the games I've tested. There are others online who convert and burn other games for you too. But be sure they guarantee that they are fully compatible. I've seen a guy who would convert a game, but it had flashing pixels and sound problems, and he'd sell it anyway.

Not all NES games will work on the Playchoice.

Hello all,
I'm almost done my rebuild of a butchered Punch-Out cab into a PLAYCHOICE 10 but there's a few details that I can't seem to get from the mostly undetailed manuals.

Like the size of the 2 smoked plexi panels that replace the 1 piece Punch-Out plexi and what the heck a "JM Bezel" is.

If anyone here has a dedicated or converted PLAYCHOICE that could answer those questions for me I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks, ERIC

Does anybody know what tool to use to take apart the playchoice 10 gun??? I have found a ninetendo website that sells security wrenches, but there are several sizes and I'm not even sure if they will work. I know people have referenced taking the gun apart, but I can't find the right tool for the gun.

thanks!

Robert Rose:
BL....i thinks it is a specialty bit made by nintendo...im an electrician and I have a tamperproof screwdriver bit set and although it has bits that are very close, none of them match whats on the gun

Rory:
It is the 4.5mm Nintendo security bit. You can get them on ebay the cheapest.

I just moved and cleaned out my PC 10 inside and out and all of my games come on and work, however, when I select Super Mario Bros. it comes up everything looks normal, BUT I can't start the game...it acts as though the start button is broken, however, it works fine on all 10 other games...any ideas?????

thanks, BL

Matt C:
Either the U1 chip is shot or the security chip is shot. The U1 can be fixed, the security cant.

Pete....clarification?

BL:
Any suggestions on directions for fixing U1 chip? Any ideas on how I might have damaged it?

Pete:
If you can see the game name in the Playchoice menu screen AND can click on the start button to see the game title screen BUT can not actually start the game, then it sounds like a bad U1 (Prg) chip.

If you can see the game name in the Playchoice menu screen but when you click the Enter the game does NOT load and the menu refreshes and the game no longer appears in the menu, then the it sounds like a bad U2 (Chr) chip.

No real reason these go bad. They might have been seated improperly, or static discharge, or improper alignment of Saturn and Mars.

I can burn you a new set. LMK

Pete

BL:
Thanks Pete...how much to burn me a new "U1' chip? It loads and everything comes on...menu etc. you just can't start the game. thanks, BL

Hi Everybody,

I am repainting my Playchoice-10 Dual Monitor cab and was wondering if I should use a satin or semi-gloss? Also, should I put a fresh coat of primer on, or just paint?

Thanks,

priglmeier:
Semi-gloss black works well.

joe:
Thanks!! Very much appreciated.

Pete:
I've been using the Rustolium semi gloss black (oil base) and it's been really hard to use with my spray gun. It comes out of the can pretty thick and I have to cut it with mineral spirits to get it to spray well. I was going to try a better brand on the next coat.

joe:
Pete, Have you tried VanSickle? We use that a lot here for farm equipment repairs and it seems to do a nice job.

My Playchoice-10 countertop/cocktail model has this problem where it randomly resets over and over to the "wait 10 sec" screen. It makes it pretty much unplayable. It has a couple smaller other problems with a couple of the buttons, but I need to get this fixed first! What do I need to do/replace/fix to get this to stop happening! It doesn't always happen, but it will eventually!

Rory:
You need a new power supply. This happened to my single monitor. Or check the 5v output and I think it can be adjusted.

AP:
How do I adjust it, and if I need a new power source where can I find one?

Also I can recommend a website called www.NintendoAge.com I'm sure there's a lot of people who could use your expertise there!

Rory:
http://www.quarterarcade.com/Game.aspx/9038

There is one at Quarter Arcade for $35 but it appears they are having web issues right now.
Your only other bet is to find one on ebay or go over to the KLOV forums and post a wanted ad.

I am Mr.collection on NA

AP:
I sent you a PM on NA. I figured I should tell you about all the problems of the cab to make sure I need to buy a new power supply, and it's not something random I forgot to tell you about. Thanks for all your help! See you on NA!

Tom K:
I had something similar happen with a MK2 arcade game I brought home one day. It was indeed a power issue, but all I had to do was plug it into a different outlet and it's been working ever since! Might be something cheap and easy to try.....

AP:
Wow, I never even thought of that! I had it plugged into a giagantic multi-outlet(12 outlets) adaptor. After plugging it straight into the wall it has been working much better! Every once in a while though it still resets. Maybe I need to try another wall outlet as that's the same wall outlet the large multitap is on. I managed to beat Ninja Gaiden 2 before it reset at the very end of the ending! Any idea why it could still be resetting, besides me trying to plug it into another wall? I'm hoping that will perma-fix this resetting problem!

Also I managed to get the player 2 controls to work, they just needed to be rewired. Only thing I need to do now is buy a new game select button/wires, and a new reset button/wires.

Thanks guys!

AP:
Ugh... it just started reseting over and over again. It's in a new wall outlet too. I can't try it on any others as they are way too far away. Guess I was just getting lucky... sigh...

Tom K:
Even though it's plugged into a different outlet, it may be on the same circuit (i.e., powered through the same breaker) as it was before so you may not see much improvement. You might try unplugging or just turning off everything else in the room (especially things like heaters and TVs!) and see if you see any improvement. Can you run an extension cord from another room and power it that way? That would have to be a temporary measure, of course. I used to work in an arcade and we had this sort of thing happen all the time.

If you're pretty sure the game is the only [major] thing drawing power and you still have problems, then yeah you probably need a new power supply. Beyond that you may have to start pulling, cleaning, and re-seating chips on the logic board, but hopefully you can solve this without going the "surgery" route!

Good luck!

AP:
A friend of mine came over today who randomly mentioned knowing a lot about fixing things such as these. He managed to narrow it down to a dirty connection, and with some cleaning fixed it. It was a dirty connection to the PSU! It's 100% solved, and hasn't reset even once. It also boots kind of different. The screen comes on gradually, instead of with a line in the middle and suddenly. I landed up ordering a PSU now, but it'll have to be an extra just in case!

Thanks for all the help guys! I really appreciate it! Now to track down Ninja Gaiden, and Ninja Gaiden 3... =)

I finally got a chance and tried to fix the problem my dual monitor PC-10 was having in my last post (which I made in September of '09). In trying to fix this problem, I discovered that I now have a new one. My enter button doesn't work. I've seen these buttons on Ebay before (though I don't see any now). What I need to know is how to remove and replace these buttons. For now, I think that I will replace my enter button with my game select button until I can find a working game select button. Also, is it more likely to be the button that is broken or something that it connects to under it? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rory:
Those buttons screw in, just disconnect and twist the micro-switch.
I would recommend taking out the Reset button as pressing Game Select and Enter will bring you back to the menu.

Hey guys. I managed to find a replacement motherboard and new control panel for my Playchoice-10 tabletop, but I have a problem. When I originally bought the PlayChoice-10, it did not come with a key for the cam lock on the control panel. Does anybody know how I can get the panel open without breaking it?

Justincredible:
if you have the rear door opened you can use a 1/4 inch ratchect with a long enough extension on it with a 7/16 socket go between cage for motherboard and lower platform of the monitor you will need to move wiringharness out of your way and hope that helps

I'm having an issue with my pc-10 motherboard. Basically the machine boots up just fine into the menu. Then you select the game you want to play, the screen freezes for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to the main menu again. Once it returns you to the main menu, the game you just tried selecting is missing from the list. You can then select another game but it will do the same thing. Eventually the entire game list will be empty. The only way to repopulate the list is to restart the machine. I have tried putting just one game in one slot and trying to play it but the same thing happens.

I acquired a PlayChoice-10 recently and in general the machine works...all but the lower monitor (see photo) so I swapped the cables from the top monitor to the bottom monitor and the menu was now displaying on the bottom just fine. This tells me that the monitor itself is working just fine (I think). Any other suggestions? I know the game is playing because my Brother-In-Law played Mario Brothers & Punch Out by SOUND ONLY - and WON a couple levels on each! HELP!!!

Rory:
I would check the harness.

Pete:
Bob Roberts has an article that describes the problem on a Wells Gardner monitor. Might be worth a look

http://www.therealbobroberts.net/slanted.html

Eric Bousquet:
Looks like the V-Hold. try adjusting that. It's a Sanyo EZ20 type monitor so you might want to get the manual online firt.

I know this doesn't have to do with any Nintendo machines, but I have a video I made about a pair of mini arcade cabinets (based on Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man) that I thought you might be interested in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqINR9TEuF8

The cabinets were scratch built of course.

Since they were meant as Christmas presents, things got pretty hairy in the last few days running up to Christmas itself. I managed to finish the cabinetry, but the electronics still require some work before they are completely finished.

Pete:
Very nice work. I just finished restoring a D2K cabinet and I know how much time these things suck up.

Matt C.:
Pics pf the DK2 cab, Pete?!?

Pete:
We'll since you asked... Here's my D2K cabinet. Turned out so nice, my wife let me keep it in our basement living room.

Hi, I recently bought a dual monitor playchoice 10 and for whatever reason can't seem to find the dip switches for changing the quarter/time rates. can anyone post or send me a picture as to where it is or should be? thank you so much for your help:)

Matt

Matt C.:
Matt...... Nice name! => If you look on this website under Playchoice Restoration, then under System Comparison, you will see a pic of the motherboard. Click on the pic and then click on it to zoom in. You will then see (2) small black boxes, near the top of the board. They have (8) small white tabs/switches a piece. It's located in the middle of the board, below the edge connector, where the wiring harness is. Hope this helps.

what is the difference in dual and single monitor on the pcb playchoice 10 boards..can I convert a single into a double..

thanks

Pete:
The wiring harnesses are different between the single and dual monitor cabinets. The single monitor has two wide edge connectors, while the dual monitor has one wide edge connector and a small 15 pin connector.

See the close-up photos of the board in the comparison section.

I bought a super mario brother vs unisystem board off of ebay...he said it was in working order..then I went to mike arcade and bought the jamma harness for it..well I cant get it to work..they say it the board and the other person doesn't say anything...nothing comes on..

thanks,

Pete:
VS Super Mario is a Unique VS game. It requires not only a full set of chips on the right side of the board (for Unisystem cabinets) but it also requires a special RP2A04 rom in position 2J. You can download the instruction sheet from the VS section. http://playchoice.riemen.net/vs_list.html

The first thing I'd do is make sure it has this chip. If you have other games, I'd try swapping out the chips for a new game.

Brad:
To clarify on the previous response, there isn't really anything special about the chip. The game just requires 2 standard RP2A04 cpu's to boot. Cost's about $5 from mikesarcade.com.

I am having some odd things happening with two of my games:

#1 - RC PRO - AM - Random garbage sprites flicker on the bottom and on the dahboard thingee. I also see some twinkling sprites on my car

#2 - Ninja Gaiden - The main character flickers and the sprite twinkles. It also looks like color of the character is too light.

I tried these games in different slots and it still happens. My other games play fine.

Anyone have this type of stuff happen? Is it the cart or the board?

Also, it seems like RC PRO AM does this after the game warms up. When I first turn it on it seems fine.

Robert Rose:
This is just a guess but the same thing would happen with NES games when they got dirty or weren't inserted right...i suggest taking the games and cleaning the contacts with alcohol, i would also clean all the contacts where the games

Robert Rose:
clean the contacts where the games insert into the main board

Hi, I recently bought a single monitor PC10 with video issues and after recapping the monitor it plays beautifully in all games, but when you are in the channel select or instruction screens the top 1/4 of the screen is slanted 45 deg to the left and shakey. Since it is only on these screens, I'm thinking is a motherboard problem. Has anyone seen this? Is there someone reputable who knows how to repair this?
Thanks, Jayme

Pete:
Bob Roberts had an article on his site that talks about this. It isn't the same monitor type, but you can see if it helps. http://therealbobroberts.net/slanted.html

I believe that it is a problem with the power source but I have been unable to find where. I noticed that the red led on the motherboard was flashing when the error was occurring and checked all the connections but it hasn't made a difference.
